Book Summary: The Maidens

Edward Fosca, a distinguished professor of Greek Tragedy at Cambridge University, is ensnared in a web of suspicion. Though he is admired for his charm and intellect by both faculty and students, one individual, Mariana Andros, is convinced of his involvement in a murder. Mariana, a perceptive and troubled group therapist, becomes increasingly fixated on a secretive society of female students known as The Maidens. This obsession intensifies when a member of the society, who happens to be a close friend of Mariana’s niece, Zoe, is discovered dead under mysterious circumstances.

As a former student of Cambridge, Mariana is acutely aware of the university’s picturesque façade, characterized by its historic architecture and revered traditions. Yet, beneath this veneer, she senses a malevolent undercurrent. Her instincts lead her to believe that, despite possessing a seemingly airtight alibi, Edward Fosca harbors dark secrets. The questions linger: Why would a professor target one of his own students? What significance does Fosca’s recurring reference to the myth of Persephone—the maiden who descends into the underworld—hold in the context of these events?

With another body surfacing, Mariana’s quest to unveil Fosca’s guilt escalates to dangerous levels. Her relentless pursuit not only jeopardizes her professional reputation but also strains her personal relationships. Nevertheless, Mariana remains undeterred, willing to risk everything, including her own safety, to unmask the true killer. In a world where trust is fleeting and danger lurks in the shadows, will she succeed in her mission, or will the quest for justice cost her dearly?
