Book Summary: Legendborn
After the tragic loss of her mother in a sudden accident, sixteen-year-old Bree Matthews finds herself overwhelmed by grief and determined to distance herself from her family’s past and childhood home. Seeking solace and a fresh start, she enrolls in a prestigious residential program for gifted high school students at UNC–Chapel Hill. However, her aspirations for a peaceful escape are shattered when she encounters a chilling magical incident on her very first night at the university.
Bree witnesses a flying demon that preys on human energies, a startling revelation that thrusts her into a hidden world of supernatural threats. She soon learns about a clandestine group known as the Legendborn, a society of students dedicated to hunting down these magical beings. In the midst of this turmoil, Bree encounters a enigmatic teenage mage who identifies himself as a “Merlin.” His attempt to erase Bree’s memories of the event fails, inadvertently awakening her own latent magical abilities and resurfacing a buried memory linked to her mother’s death: on that fateful night, another Merlin was present at the hospital.
Determined to uncover the truth behind her mother’s untimely demise, Bree resolves to infiltrate the Legendborn as an initiate. To aid her quest, she enlists Nick, a disenchanted member of the society with his own motives for seeking justice. Their reluctant alliance exposes them to the depths of the society’s secrets and draws them closer together. As the Legendborn reveal their lineage as descendants of King Arthur’s knights, they warn Bree of an impending magical conflict. Faced with a choice between using her newfound powers to dismantle the society or joining their fight, Bree must confront her own beliefs and decide how far she is willing to go in her pursuit of the truth.
