Book Summary: Here in the Real World

Ware eagerly anticipates the arrival of summer, longing for a season spent in solitude, immersed in his imaginative world of knights and the medieval era. Unfortunately, his dreams are dashed when his parents enroll him in a local Recreation camp, a place he dreads for its inevitable demand for social interaction and participation in activities that he perceives as mundane and designed for “normal” children.

On his inaugural day at camp, Ware encounters Jolene, a resilient and enigmatic girl who is nurturing a garden amidst the ruins of an abandoned church adjacent to the campgrounds. Captivated by her unconventional approach, Ware finds himself drawn to the church lot, where he begins to construct a fortress-like retreat of his own, a sanctuary away from the imposed social norms of camp life.

Jolene openly derides Ware’s aspirations, labeling him a dreamer who is disconnected from the realities of life, unlike her. Despite their contrasting personalities, both Ware and Jolene share a vital connection: the lot serves as a sanctuary for both, a place where they can escape their challenges.

However, when their cherished refuge faces potential destruction, Ware turns to the inspiring Code of Chivalry embodied by knights of old. He resolves to engage in a battle against the injustices threatening their haven, vowing to uphold the principles of righteousness and goodness.

Yet, as the narrative unfolds, Ware must grapple with the complexities of heroism in the real world. What does it truly mean to be a hero? And what can two outsiders accomplish in the face of adversity? This poignant tale explores the themes of friendship, courage, and the quest for belonging, as two misfit children strive to protect their shared dream.
